Badminton takes its name from Badminton House—home of the Duke of Beaufort in the English county of Gloucestershire. The Duke is credited with bringing a version of the game—Poona—back from India and introducing it to his guests and friends in 1873.
Games involving shuttlecocks have been played for centuries across Eurasia but game we know as badminton developed in the mid-19th century among the British as a version of the earlier game of battledore and shuttlecock. [“Battledore” was an older term for “racquet”]
